“He Said He Was Innocent — Then the Evidence Spoke”

[Everyone rises as Judge Ellison enters and takes her seat behind the bench.]

Judge Ellison: Please be seated. We are here today in the matter of State vs. Jordan Matthews, case number 2025-CF-1187. Are both sides ready to proceed?

Prosecutor (Mr. Grayson): Ready, Your Honor.

Defense Attorney (Ms. Calderon): Ready for the defense, Your Honor.

Judge Ellison: Very well. Mr. Grayson, you may proceed with your opening statement.

Prosecutor: Thank you, Your Honor. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, today you will hear evidence that clearly demonstrates the defendant, Mr. Jordan Matthews, knowingly and willingly committed the offense of burglary on the night of June 14th. Surveillance footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence will make it clear—beyond a reasonable doubt—that the accused is guilty as charged.

Judge Ellison: Thank you, Mr. Grayson. Ms. Calderon?

Defense Attorney: Thank you, Your Honor. Members of the jury, I ask you to keep an open mind. While the prosecution will attempt to paint a damning picture, we will show that the evidence is far from conclusive. Mr. Matthews maintains his innocence, and we will prove that he was not at the scene that night.

Judge Ellison: Thank you, counsel. We will now begin with the prosecution’s first witness. Mr. Grayson?

Prosecutor: The State calls Officer Linda Meyers to the stand.

[Officer Meyers walks up to the witness stand and is sworn in.]

Bailiff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Officer Meyers: I do.

Judge Ellison: You may proceed.
