Yoga Teacher Thinks She’s Above the Law
Lately, I’ve been noticing a concerning trend among some in the wellness community — a dangerous idea that some yoga teachers have started to embrace, that they are somehow above the law. It’s as if the tranquility of the yoga studio gives them an exemption from the rules that govern the rest of us.
Take Sara, for example. She’s the kind of yoga instructor who prides herself on being in touch with the universe, yet when it comes to basic legal responsibilities, she seems to think they don’t apply to her. From dismissing concerns about proper insurance coverage for her classes, to defying safety regulations, her attitude seems to scream: “I’m enlightened; I don’t need rules.”
While yoga is about mindfulness, balance, and compassion, it’s also about respect — for others, for the law, and for the community we create. This mindset that some teachers carry, of being above accountability, undermines everything yoga stands for. After all, true enlightenment doesn’t come with immunity from the real-world responsibilities we all face.
It’s time for the yoga community to step up and recognize that no one, no matter how spiritually advanced they think they are, should be exempt from the rules of society. True leaders lead by example, and that means respecting both the spiritual and legal frameworks that keep us safe and responsible.
